Alif (ا) Counting Methodology

Transparent methodology verified against early manuscripts

Why Alif is Complex

Unlike other Quranic initials, Alif has multiple forms in Arabic script. Modern Quran editions added diacritical marks (tashkeel) and helper symbols to assist readers with correct pronunciation. These additions, including the dagger alif, were not present in early manuscripts. This creates challenges for consistent counting, as modern text differs from original orthography.

Source Text

All analyses use the Uthmani text from Tanzil.net, the widely accepted digital Quran standard. Where modern text differs from early manuscripts, we apply corrections to the modern text — not to the manuscripts. Early manuscripts serve as our verification source.
